Travelling to the Silicon Valley in May has been one of the (many) highlights of recent times. Since returning I have been asked often to share stories from this once-in-a-lifetime trip.
One of the most often asked questions is about the time spent at Facebook. There is an undeniable fascination with the empire that is Facebook, so to have the opportunity to learn more about one of the world’s dominant social networks was exciting and insightful.
I’d like to share some of this experience with a series of snippets and photographs. The photo I have chosen shows a Facebook ‘micro-kitchen’. These micro-kitchens are located generously throughout the Facebook campus and are stocked with candy, soda, fruit and veggies, yoghurt, chips – really every type of snack you could want for to keep you focused. Everything in the kitchens are free to staff and visitors at Facebook HQ.
What is more interesting is if you divert your attention to the ceiling. All the ceilings throughout the campus are unfinished. This is a deliberate design requirement to fit with the ethos that the work of Facebookers is never complete, it is in a constant state of ‘beta’ and continuous development.
